Whispering palms and the sleep phenomenon

Dad came home with the good news. He would be celebrating his birthday. Where? I asked knowing he loved adventure and celebrates August occasions in new places. "The Whispering Palms in Badagry, Lagos, Nigeria". I was amused all day pondering on what kinds of whispers I could hear.  When we got there I was amazed with the serene atmosphere. I could Raffia palms everywhere Whispering sonorously. Still tired of the stress of the highway and traffic congestion, I decided relaxing under the shade of a palm tree. All of a sudden, I could hear the whisper "Sleep" continously. Unconscious of what was happening, I fell asleep.

What is sleep??

Sleep means to rest with your eyes closed and your mind and body not active. Sleep is very beneficial. It ensures:
1 Longer living: In a 2010 study of women within the ages 50-79, more deaths occurred in women who got less than five hours sleep. When you sleep, you have a relaxed mind, worry less and gain vitality which ensures longer living.
2 Creativity: In the place of sleep, a man's mind gets relaxed. A man dreams due to rapid eye motions. Creativity is spurred.
Researchers from Havard and Boston college found that people seem to strengthen the emotional components of a memory during sleep which may help spur the creative purpose.

Sleep has many more advantages. ...........
Dad woke me up, disappointed I didn't have fun on his birthday. Unknown to him, I enjoyed my sleep

“People say, 'I'm going to sleep now,' as if it were nothing. But it's really a bizarre activity. 'For the next several hours, while the sun is gone, I'm going to become unconscious, temporarily losing command over everything I know and understand. When the sun returns, I will resume my life.'

If you didn't know what sleep was, and you had only seen it in a science fiction movie, you would think it was weird and tell all your friends about the movie you'd seen.

They had these people, you know? And they would walk around all day and be OK? And then, once a day, usually after dark, they would lie down on these special platforms and become unconscious. They would stop functioning almost completely, except deep in their minds they would have adventures and experiences that were completely impossible in real life. As they lay there, completely vulnerable to their enemies, their only movements were to occasionally shift from one position to another; or, if one of the 'mind adventures' got too real, they would sit up and scream and be glad they weren't unconscious anymore. Then they would drink a lot of coffee.'

So, next time you see someone sleeping, make believe you're in a science fiction movie. And whisper, 'The creature is regenerating itself.”
